HARRISBURG—As murders in Philadelphia begin running ahead of 2021, Rep. Martina White (R-Philadelphia) praised the House Select Committee on Restoring Law and Order for issuing its first subpoenas in its investigation.
“This is another sign of District Attorney Larry Krasner’s dereliction of duty,” White said. “When prosecutions fail, crime rises. This is why the House investigation into crime in Philadelphia is so important.”
On Wednesday and Thursday, five men were killed in separate homicides in Philadelphia, including a man whose body was set on fire in a field.
The killings raised the city’s annual homicide tally to 327 victims, which police statistics show is an increase over last year’s record-setting year.
This week the House Select Committee on Restoring Law and Order announced it had issued subpoenas as part of the committee’s work authorized by
House Resolution 216.
House Resolution 216, approved by a bi-partisan majority in the House on June 29, established the Select Committee on Restoring Law and Order to investigate, review and make legislative findings and recommendations to the House of Representatives regarding the rising rates of crime in the City of Philadelphia; the city’s use of public funds intended for law enforcement and prosecuting crime; the enforcement of crime victim rights in Philadelphia; and the use of public funds for the purpose of benefitting the city’s crime victims. The resolution authorizes the chairman to subpoena information relevant to the committee’s work.
“I’m encouraged by the latest news from the committee,” White said. “This is a sign the committee is taking its job seriously and will produce recommendations that will help bring safety to the citizens of Philadelphia.”
